Other roles in Six Sigma Projects

Introduction

While the belt system (White, Yellow, Green, Black, and Master Black Belt) forms the backbone of the Six Sigma hierarchy, there are several other crucial roles in Six Sigma projects that ensure the smooth implementation and success of these initiatives. Understanding these roles is key for anyone involved in Six Sigma to appreciate the collaborative effort required for effective project execution.

Champion

  1. Role Definition: Champions are high-level individuals who ensure that Six Sigma projects align with the organization's strategic objectives. Typically, they are senior managers or executives.

  2. Responsibilities: Champions select projects, allocate resources, and remove organizational barriers. They also oversee the Six Sigma program at a strategic level and ensure that project goals align with business objectives.

Sponsor

  1. Role Definition: Sponsors, often confused with Champions, are typically one level below Champions in the organizational hierarchy. They have a more hands-on role in Six Sigma projects.

  2. Responsibilities: Sponsors provide direct support and guidance to project teams. They help in resolving issues and ensuring that the necessary resources are available. Sponsors are also responsible for project approval and reviewing progress.

Process Owner

  1. Role Definition: The Process Owner is responsible for the process being improved in a Six Sigma project. This role is usually assigned to a manager who has ownership and accountability for the performance and sustainability of the process.

  2. Responsibilities: Their key responsibilities include defining the process, understanding its intricacies, and ensuring that the improvements are implemented. Post-project, they maintain the gains and monitor process performance.

Team Member

  1. Role Definition: Team Members are individuals who work on the Six Sigma project. They are usually employees who are part of the process or function being improved.

  2. Responsibilities: Their primary responsibility is to provide process details, offer insights, and assist in the implementation of improvements. They actively participate in problem-solving activities and may take on specific tasks within the project.

Project Manager

  1. Role Definition: In some organizations, especially in larger or more complex projects, a dedicated Project Manager may be appointed.

  2. Responsibilities: They are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects. They ensure that the project is delivered on time, within scope, and budget. Their role often involves coordinating with the Black Belt or Green Belt leading the Six Sigma aspects of the project.

Subject Matter Expert (SME)

  1. Role Definition: SMEs are individuals with in-depth knowledge or expertise in the area being addressed in the project.

  2. Responsibilities: They provide technical or business expertise, guidance, and insights necessary for understanding complex processes. SMEs play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and feasibility of the project's technical aspects.

Conclusion

Six Sigma projects require a team effort, and the success of these projects depends on the effective collaboration of all these roles. From strategic alignment provided by Champions and Sponsors to the on-the-ground insights offered by Team Members and SMEs, each role contributes uniquely to the project's success. Understanding and appreciating these roles is vital for anyone looking to excel in Six Sigma initiatives.
